Teaching qualifications explained

There are several FE teaching qualifications. Which one you need, and when, depends on the role and the nation.

Common qualifications

Level 3 Award in Education and Training

A short introductory qualification, often taken before or soon after starting.

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

Suits people with some teaching responsibility, such as instructors.

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, or PGCE / Cert Ed

Full teaching qualifications commonly expected for lecturers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

TQFE (Scotland)

The Teaching Qualification in Further Education, taken by college lecturers in Scotland.

Assessor qualifications

Assessor roles often require an assessing qualification, such as a Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.

Qualification titles and requirements change. Check with the college and the awarding or professional body.
