Teaching in further education

FE colleges teach technical and vocational subjects to young people and adults. Here is what the work looks like.

What FE is

Further education covers learning after school that is not a university degree. Colleges teach full-time study programmes for 16 to 18 year olds, apprenticeships, adult courses and some higher-level technical qualifications.

Who you would teach

Learners range from school leavers starting a Level 1 course to adults retraining and apprentices already in work. Groups are mixed in ability and confidence.

A typical week

  • Practical workshop sessions and theory lessons
  • Planning and preparing materials
  • Assessing work and giving feedback
  • Tracking progress and supporting individual learners

Support for new staff

Colleges usually provide induction, mentoring and help with gaining a teaching qualification. The amount of support varies.
