Become a trade teacher

If you have years of experience in a trade, colleges may want you to teach it. Here is what that involves and how to start.

Who colleges are looking for

Most technical teaching roles call for substantial, relevant industry experience and a recognised qualification in your trade, often at Level 3 or above. Colleges care about whether you can do the work well, explain it clearly and keep learners safe.

Types of role

  • Lecturer or teacher: plans and delivers lessons and practical sessions, and assesses learners.
  • Instructor or demonstrator: supports practical workshop sessions.
  • Assessor or skills coach: assesses apprentices, often visiting workplaces.

Do you need a teaching qualification?

Often not at the start. Many colleges appoint people from industry and support them to train on the job. Read teaching without a teaching qualification.

Requirements differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and between colleges. Treat this as general guidance, not a guarantee of eligibility.
