Teaching in further education in Wales for tradespeople

Further education colleges in Wales deliver vocational programmes and apprenticeships across a wide range of technical subjects, often working closely with local employers. Experienced tradespeople can move into teaching, instructing and assessing roles.

Registering with the Education Workforce Council

In Wales, people who teach or support learning in further education are required to register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC). Registration applies to many FE roles, including lecturers and some learning support roles. Your college will tell you which category applies and when you need to register.

Teaching qualifications

Colleges in Wales commonly expect lecturers without a teaching qualification to work towards one after appointment. Check the expectation and any support for the specific role.

Welsh language

Some roles, particularly in areas with many Welsh-speaking learners, ask for Welsh language skills or offer support to develop them. Job adverts usually make this clear.

Background checks

Roles working with young people or vulnerable adults normally require an enhanced DBS check.

This is general guidance. Requirements change and differ between colleges, so always check the details for a specific role and current official guidance.

Questions

Is EWC registration something I arrange myself?

You register individually, but your employer will guide you on the category and timing. Check the EWC's current guidance for details.

Do I need to speak Welsh to teach in Wales?

Not for every role. Some vacancies ask for Welsh language skills; many do not. Check each advert.
